Protect Your Back While Enjoying the Spring Season

Spring is finally here! The warmer weather and longer days are perfect for getting outside, tackling yard work, gardening, and spring cleaning. But before you start lifting heavy bags of soil or bending over to pull weeds, take a moment to protect your lower back. Here's some tips:

  • Back injuries are common during springtime activities, especially when people jump into physical tasks after a more sedentary winter. Using proper bending and lifting techniques can help you stay safe and pain-free.
  • Always bend at your hips and knees (not your waist). When lifting, keep the object close to your body and engage your core muscles before standing up.
  • Avoid twisting while lifting or toting; instead, turn your whole body by pivoting your feet. If something is too heavy or awkward, ask for help or use a tool like a wheelbarrow or dolly.
  • While gardening or cleaning, try to kneel or squat instead of bending for long periods. Taking regular breaks and stretching can also reduce tension and prevent strain.
  • According to UC Davis Health, there are about 2.6 million emergency room visits for sports-related injuries annually. Dr. Winkler can help your athelete reduce their risk for injuries in a variety of sports.

This spring, enjoy all the activities the season has to offer—just remember to move smart and lift safely. Your back will thank you!
